Cellfina

Dr. Sparano was one of the first cosmetic surgeons in New Jersey to offer Cellfina™ - the ONLY FDA-cleared, minimally invasive system clinically PROVEN to improve the appearance of cellulite.

Upon release, the Cellfina™ treatment has the longest FDA clearance for any cellulite treatment. It offers a non-surgical, minimally invasive approach to the treatment of buttock and thigh cellulite. Patients experience significant and rapid improvement, with minimal side effects, and an enduring result. At 2 years, 96% of patients were satisfied with their results, surpassing the patient satisfaction rates associated with other leading cellulite treatments.

Cellfina™ has such high success rates because the nature of the treatment is to target the precise underlying cause of cellulite, which are fibrous bands called septae, which extend from within the fatty layer of the tissue, to dimple the skin. Cellfina™ takes advantage of two simple processes to create the reproducibly successful results. Firstly, the procedure uses simple subdermal undermining. We’ve learned that when we undermine skin in the fatty layer, we can improve its surface texture. Cellfina™ takes this principle to the next level with use of patented and precise technology, and design of a vacuum-assisted skin acquisition process for very customized, directed, and controlled therapy.

How does it work?

Dr. Sparano performs the Cellfina™ procedure using sterile technique in an office setting. The entire procedure is performed using local anesthesia (injected anesthesia) only. There is no need for sedation or intravenous anesthesia. There are custom platforms which help gather the skin for controlled local anesthetic injection. Similar platforms are used to precisely guide the subdermal undermining device which treats the dimpled or linear cellulite band. Before each procedure photographic documentation is logged and used to direct the treatment. The treatment takes approximately 40-60 minutes to perform. Patients should expect limited downtime with quick recovery.

How many treatments are needed?

The results obtained with the Cellfina™ procedure are obtained over a SINGLE TREATMENT session. Usually, patients can achieve all the visible cellulite reduction they are seeking in one session.

How long do results last?

The results are very long-lasting, with FDA data showing AT LEAST 2 years of efficacy. Result tracking has not been reported beyond that time point, but because the treatment targets the very cause of the cellulite dimpling, results should endure for great durations. There is ongoing analysis in this regard. The pivotal study reported a 96% patient satisfaction rate at two years.

What is unique about Cellfina™?

Dr. Sparano has brought Cellfina™ into his practice because it works! Cellulite has been a difficult entity to treat. Before Cellfina™, there hasn’t been much available to treat cellulite with reproducible success AND long-lasting results. Cellfina™ now offers such a solution, and in an office-based setting, using local anesthesia alone. It is a very simple procedure which a well-trained surgeon can perform. Also, Cellfina™ is different from alternative treatments for cellulite which typically use thermal or energy-based methods to target the fibrous septae. It differs from traditional subcision techniques in that the dermal undermining is precisely controlled at a targeted depth, and across a designated area uniformly. Further the designated depth selected for the Cellfina™ procedure, minimizes side effects, complications, and unpredictability.

Who are the best candidates for Cellfina™?

Women with deep dimples on the buttocks and/or thighs are the best candidates. Shallow dimples and linear bands can also be treated. All patients are evaluated for candidacy prior to treatment.

What are the expected side effects?

There were no serious adverse events associated with Cellfina™. The most common side effects reported by patients in the pivotal study for FDA clearance were soreness and bruising. At three days after treatment, patients rated their pain as minimal (2.7 on a scale of 0-10 [10=extreme pain]), and most (82%) felt discomfort only with touch or pressure applied to the treated area. This minimal pain improved quickly with time.

There can be some leakage of the local anesthetic from the injection sites within the first several hours following treatment. Patients are typically instructed to wear tighter garments for up to two weeks following treatment. Dr. Sparano and staff have a precise set of guidelines for patients to follow. Cellfina™ is very safe.

Why does Dr. Sparano perform Cellfina™?

Dr. Sparano is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon. However, non-surgical body sculpting procedures have become a clinical interest and skill of his. Many of the same procedures used for the face, neck, and décolletage, are also used on various parts of the body. The physiologic principles are the same. With Cellfina™, the very essence of the procedure is subdermal undermining, which is something Dr. Sparano is performing on the face and neck regularly each week. Most of all, Dr. Sparano is proud to be one of the first in New Jersey to have researched the efficacy of this treatment, and to have brought this very effective technique for cellulite reduction to New Jersey.

How soon will patients see improvement after treatment?

Results can be realized as soon as three days after treatment. In the pivotal study, patients became INCREASINGLY satisfied between the 3-month and 2-year time points. The results are seen quickly, and last long durations.

Does Cellfina™ involve surgical “cutting”?

Cellfina™ does not involve an operating room, sedating anesthesia, or traditional surgical “cutting.” The technique uses a minimally invasive, small needle-sized device to treat the cellulite-causing bands just beneath the surface of the skin.
