TotalFX™ Laser Skin Resurfacing

Dr. Sparano is one of a few regional surgeons offering the Encore UltraPulse system for fractional CO2 laser resurfacing. The UltraPulse technology delivers fractional laser therapy allowing for the treatments known as ActiveFX™, DeepFX™, and TotalFX™. Each of these treatments involves treating the skin in a customized fashion with controlled depth, and leaves surrounding healthy skin to aid in the regeneration process. The UltraPulse technology is designed to deliver unrivaled results with minimal downtime.

Dr. Sparano has served as a previous regional instructor for Lumenis and specifically for TotalFX™ treatments. He has performed hundreds of procedures and has developed unique protocols which can be tailored to fit each individual’s distinct facial needs.

As we age, we accumulate colored spots on the skin (dyschromias), and more importantly we lose both volume and organization of collagen in the deeper layers of our skin. Collagen is a vital structural element that helps give the skin its strength and youthful qualities. One of the reasons Dr. Sparano believes the TotalFX™ treatment is of the best laser treatments available, is because its capacity to stimulate new collagen in a natural and cosmetically pleasing way. This regenerated collagen helps prevent the tendency for facial skin to involute with a “crepe paper” pattern of wrinkling as it ages.

Unlike most laser therapies, the TotalFX™ treatment delivers enough energy to invoke substantial, impressive results while at the same time minimizing associated downtime. In order to achieve the level of improvements a TotalFX™ treatment delivers, patients previously would experience several weeks of crusting and months of facial redness. With the UltraPulse technology, a TotalFX™ treatment can improve the appearance of the skin with between 3-14 days of redness, depending on the type of treatment. Furthermore, the results improve progressively over the first 6 months following treatment.

The ActiveFX™ treatment is designed to treat dyschromias (pigmented areas) as well as superficial wrinkles of the skin with approximately 5 days of healing time after a single treatment. After an ActiveFX™ treatment the skin will appear tightened, more refreshed, and more homogeneous in color with smaller pore size.

The DeepFX™ treatment is designed to treat scars, dermal lesions, and to stimulate long-term skin remodeling for a rejuvenated appearance. This is accomplished after a single treatment with about 5-6 days of healing time. The skin will continue to improve over the first 6 months after treatment as new collagen is deposited to refortify the skin in the body’s own natural way.

The TotalFX™ treatment is the ultimate in laser skin resurfacing. It is designed to treat dyschromias (pigmented areas), wrinkles, scars, acne scars, dermal lesions, and to tighten the skin while stimulating long-term collagen remodeling for a refreshed appearance. This is accomplished after a single treatment with about 5-14 days of healing time. The skin will appear tightened, more refreshed, and more homogeneous in color with smaller pore size. The skin will continue to improve over the first 6 months after treatment as new collagen is deposited in the deep layers of the skin. The TotalFX™ treatment is a healthy procedure for the skin and brings great satisfaction in the weeks and months that follow, as well as in years ahead.

The above procedures are performed under sedation anesthesia, and are thus painless. The treatment generally takes between 20-30 minutes. There is generally no need for additional treatments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is a good candidate for TotalFX™ laser skin resurfacing?
TotalFX™ laser skin resurfacing is a good treatment for anyone with signs of aging skin, sun-damaged skin, colored spots, acne scarring, loose skin of the lower eyelids, dull-appearing skin, or wide pores. Dr. Sparano believes the TotalFX™ treatment is a good investment for anyone, as the long-term benefits to the skin are healthy and substantial.

Where is TotalFX™ laser skin resurfacing performed?
Dr. Sparano typically performs the procedure in the treatment room at his office. A combination of oral sedation, regional nerve blocks, and injection anesthesia are used to prepare the patient for the treatment.

How long does the procedure take?
A complete TotalFX™ procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to perform. Patients are asleep and entirely comfortable. There is no pain during the procedure.

What is recovery like after TotalFX™ laser skin resurfacing?
For the first 4-5 days after a TotalFX™ procedure, the face is swollen with superficial crust formation. The face is usually erythematous (pink in color) with some mild swelling for days 5-7. Depending on the depth of treatment performed, on average the face may return to a normal appearance by day 7, or still have an additional week of decreasing pinkness. Post-procedure pain as early as the day following treatment usually requires nothing more than Tylenol/acetaminophen therapy.
